Actors on Acting #7--Technique (Download Word version of #7) © 2004 Hawk Storm
The key to success is confidence. The key to confidence is a technique that works. You devise your own technique based on all the
information you can scrounge from every available source.--Anita Jesse
Stanislavsky gave us a technique that became known as the Method. It involved sense memory, affective memory, relaxation
and concentration. This was a revolutionary way for the actor to get into character. Technique and method are synonymous.
The Method was a way to get away from presentational acting.
It is a way to get to the truth.--Bruce Willis
So technique is our way to get to the truth of the character, to get into character and the character’s circumstances.
As we will see some
actors have their emotions so accessible that they need no technique and others need a technique when they cannot gain access to the true emotion. We will also see that actors do not always use the same
technique each time. You will find sources here to “scrounge” what works for you.
